Dragonite™ allows customers to protect natural resources, human health, and the global environment through its use as a sorbent in environmental remediation and emissions capture. Dragonite performs as an effective sieve to sequester pollutants released from a variety of sources such as oil spills, power plants or mine sites. Once captured, the pollutant is immobilized in a solid form where it can be collected and disposed in an eco-friendly manner.

Applications Include:

  • Oil
  • PCBs
  • Toluene
  • Phenols
  • Methylene Blue
  • Chromium 6
  • Ammonium
  • Heavy and Alkali Metals
  • Uranium

Dragonite Capability in Oil Remediation

Deepwater Environment
Dragonite works in oil remediation through its ability to adsorb, de-emulsify and disperse micro-droplets of oil which then float in the upper water column of the deep sea environment (Dragonite is NOT a sinking agent). Upon dispersion, the outer silica surface of Dragonite rapidly enhances the growth of bacteria necessary for hydrocarbon degradation. Dragonite is able to adsorb 85-245% of its weight in oil and data indicates that upon colonization of bacteria, 98% of the hydrocarbon is naturally degraded within 7 days- eliminating the need to retrieve the sequestered oil.

Marshland Environment
On oil polluted marshland, Dragonite adsorbs the oil via capillary “wicking” and prevents penetration to the subsurface. Because Dragonite does not need to be recovered once the oil is adsorbed, disruption of the marsh wildlife is avoided

Applied Minerals and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have entered into a Cooperative Research & Development Agreement (CRADA) to further develop this application. Click here to learn more.
